On the 22nd and 23rd June 2023, Humanity & Inclusion attended the International Meeting of Mine Action National Directors and United Nations Advisers in Geneva.

Humanity & Inclusion has been conducting land release operations in Iraq since 2016. Clearance is currently underway in Kirkuk.

Anfal is a mental health worker with Humanity & Inclusion in Iraq. She used to live in Mosul, which was bombed in 2017. Anfal and her family survived an airstrike that hit their house. 

Published on 13th October, Humanity & Inclusion’s report “No safe recovery: The impact of Explosive Ordnance contamination on affected populations in Iraq” paints a harrowing picture of the daily lives of Iraqis.

Between October 2016 and July 2017, Mosul, in Nineveh province, was the scene of heavy fighting. The intensive use of explosive weapons such as bombs and improvised mines was particularly destructive in the western half of the city. More than 500,000 people are still displaced in camps.

Humanity and Inclusion is currently clearing weapons in areas of Iraq contaminated during the recent conflict with the Islamic State group and the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

In Iraq, Humanity and Inclusion provides risk education on explosive remnants of war, which pose a constant threat to the local population.

One year ago, on October 17^th 2016, armed forces launched a military offensive to retake the city of Mosul, in Iraq. More than one million civilians were displaced by the fighting, which lasted nine months, and over 18,000 people were injured. Below is an update on one of the region’s biggest humanitarian crises.
