MADAGASCAR HAS BEEN DEVASTATED BY CYCLONE BATSIRAI

On Saturday morning, the east coast of Madagascar was hit by the huge cyclone Batsirai with winds of 235km/hour. Whole villages are reported to be almost completely destroyed.

Around 52,000 people have been displaced and it is estimated that as many as 150,000 people could be forced to leave their homes.

Current reports indicate that 20 people have been killed, with over 3,000 homes destroyed and over 6,000 homes flooded. 14 bridges and 12 road access points have been blocked and over 200 schools have been damaged, affecting over 9,000 students.

Cyclone Batsirai follows tropical storm Ana which already killed 50 people in Madagascar and damaged tens of thousands of houses at the end of January.

And, the end of cyclone season is not yet in sight. As thousands remain without homes, electricity, clean water or access to medical services, the disasters are expected to continue. Cyclone Emnati is now nearing the coast of Madagascar, and it is predicted to take roughly the same path as Batsirai, with the same intensity.
